At Inner Peace Acupuncture & Wellness, a significant number of cases we treat are related to ovulation disorders. Ovulation is the single most important event in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Without it, conception is impossible. It is also the most-common cause of infertility in women. The hormonal inner-workings the menstrual cycle are so complex that even the smallest deviations can disrupt the ovulation process.
Ovulation disorders include:
Amenorrhea
Anovulation
PCOS – specifically highlighted below
Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)
Resistant Ovarian Syndrome
In Chinese medicine, there is never a one-size-fits all treatment approach. We recognize that the reproductive system is comprised of many systems working together. Many of our patients are able to ovulate naturally without the use of fertility drugs after a series of treatments.
There are however, certain situations where medication is necessary to regulate ovulation. In that case, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can still help to enhance the effects of the medication and to improve ovarian response.
We specifically want to highlight Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) because it is the most common cause of ovulation disorder, and give you a brief overview on how we approach treatment.
PCOS
Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, also known as poly-cystic ovary disease (PCOD) is the leading cause of anovulation in women, and a major cause of infertility. It is said to affect 10 percent of women of reproductive age and up to 90 percent of women with irregular menstrual cycles.
Blood work, menstrual irregularity, and/or an ultrasound will confirm the diagnosis of PCOS. Women with PCOS often have elevated male hormones due to insulin resistance that interfere with the normal production of female hormone, estrogen. This disrupts ovulation, creates multiple cysts on ovaries caused by formation of many immature eggs. Some women with PCOS have no symptoms, most will have one or more of the following:
Obesity
Excessive hair growth
Enlarged ovaries with many small cysts
Insulin resistance
Acne
Irregular or absent menstruation
During the initial discovery session at Inner Peace Acupuncture & Wellness, areas that need improvement are identified. The Fertility Acupuncturist will come up with a treatment plan to regulate hormones, decrease insulin resistance (even if weight is a non-issue,) and induce ovulation that includes:
Acupuncture treatments
Chinese herbal medicine
Diet recommendation with meal planning and sample recipes
Exercise guidelines specific to each person’s overall health condition
Lifestyle suggestions
Stress management techniques
After a few months of treatment, many patients will start to notice signs of ovulation such as mid-cycle spike in basal body temperature, and increase in fertile cervical mucus. Menstrual cycles will become more regular; long cycles will shorten. Skin will eventually clear and excess hair will diminish. Pregnancy usually follows shortly after as well!
