Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about acupuncture in Charlotte and how it can support your health and fertility journey.

General & Safety

What does acupuncture feel like?
Acupuncture uses hair-thin, flexible, sterile needles that feel nothing like an injection. Many patients hardly notice the insertion and instead experience a sensation known as de qi: a gentle heaviness, warmth, or energy traveling along the meridian pathways. Treatments are usually deeply relaxing and leave clients feeling calm and centered.

Is acupuncture safe, especially during fertility treatments or early pregnancy?
Yes. Licensed acupuncturists follow rigorous training (including Clean Needle Technique) and use single-use, sterilized needles for every treatment. It’s safe throughout fertility journeys—but certain acupuncture points (like those on the lower abdomen or specific triggering points) are avoided after embryo transfer or when pregnancy is suspected.

Fertility-Specific

When should I start acupuncture if I’m planning IVF, IUI, or trying to conceive naturally?
Start as soon as possible. Ideally, begin acupuncture 3–4 months before ART (IVF/IUI) to give your body time for hormonal balance, improved uterine and ovarian blood flow, and lifestyle adjustments.

How often should I receive treatments?
Frequency depends on your goals. Typical guidance includes:

  • Pre-ART prep: 1–2 sessions per week for 3 months

  • During ovarian stimulation: up to 2–3 sessions weekly

  • Around embryo transfer: sessions just before and after implantation are common

Does acupuncture improve fertility?
Research suggests acupuncture may support fertility by:

  • Improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus

  • Regulating reproductive hormones

  • Reducing stress and enhancing emotional resilience
Some studies show increased implantation and live birth rates when acupuncture is done before and after embryo transfer. However, evidence is mixed, and results vary. It’s an effective complement—especially for stress reduction and emotional well-being.

How many sessions does it take to see results?
While outcomes vary, most practices recommend a consistent course, often 8–12 sessions over 2–3 months, before expecting noticeable changes. Alignment with your menstrual cycle and ART protocol is key.

Treatment Experience

What happens during my first visit?
You’ll begin with a comprehensive intake: discussing health history, fertility goals, cycle patterns, lifestyle, stress, diet, and sleep. Your practitioner will then offer a clear, personalized treatment plan and guide you through the acupuncture session, followed by recommendations for home care and next steps.

How long are the sessions?
Typical sessions run about 60 minutes. The initial visit may be longer to accommodate intake and planning. After acupuncture needles are placed, you’ll rest quietly for 20–25 minutes in a calm environment while the balances take effect.

Additional Support & Conditions

What happens if I’m not pregnant after 6 months?
If you’re not pregnant after following our suggestions step-by-step along with consistent treatments, there may be hidden medical conditions. These conditions may be polyps, blocked tube, uterine infections, structural issues with the uterus, etc. We’ll refer you to a Reproductive Endocrinologist within our network if you don’t already have one.

Do you ever have people who don’t become pregnant even with your help?
Yes. Everyone’s situation is different and it’s possible that even giving it 110% doesn’t equal results. Some of these patients will move on to IUI or IVF, and use acupuncture in conjunction with the treatments to ensure success the first time around. Continuing acupuncture along with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) multiplies your success. For more information on Acupuncture and ART, click here.

The best advice we can give you is to take daily actions towards achieving your goal.

How long do I need to come for treatments?
If you are being treated for fertility, results can be seen in 3-6 months, whether it be in your cycle, ovulation, or even pregnancy. The timeline is different for everyone.

Can acupuncture help with conditions like PCOS, low AMH, or recurrent miscarriage?
Yes! Acupuncture, combined with herbs and lifestyle changes, can support conditions like PCOS, unexplained infertility, low AMH, and recurrent miscarriage by improving hormonal regulation, blood flow, and emotional resilience.

Should I continue acupuncture after I get pregnant?
Many clients continue acupuncture into early pregnancy for continued hormonal support, stress reduction, and to promote uterine health. Treatments commonly extend through the first trimester.
